They were nearly wiped out in the 19th century when forests were clearcut for the construction boom in San Francisco. California’s oldest state park was established in 1902 in the Santa Cruz Mountains to save the last giants. Forests are vital for us. They store carbon emitted by human activity worldwide, and they exhale oxygen into the atmosphere we all breathe every day. I share this in celebration of the International Day of Forests.
