Amsterdam now has one of Europe's strongest residential real estate markets, with prices rising 23% last year, and over 6% alone in December. The boom has helped transform Amsterdam-West, a large district outside the historic canal belt. In 2006, when prices reached their previous peak, it was possible to buy a whole townhouse in Oud West, Amsterdam-West's most central neighborhood, for around 500,000 Euros.
