Puerto Almanza, the fishermen village that resists

Puerto Almanza is a small settlement in Tierra del Fuego on the northern shore of the Beagle Channel. It is located at 54º52’74″ S 067º34′36.85″ W Coordinates and its almost opposite to the Chilean town Puerto Williams. The first settlement dates back to 1966 with the detachment of the Naval Prefecture Argentina. In 1991 began the settlement of the first civilian population and in 2001 some fishermen established there building their own huts. Its population is approximately of 100 inhabitants. It is the southernmost settlement of Argentina. There are about 30 houses that belong to artisanal fishermen who are dedicated to the extract of centolla - typical mollusk similar to the crab -, “centollones”, mussels, clams and other mollusks. Although there is currently projected an ambitious plan to provide an adequate port infrastructure to this Fuegian town, the local fishermen work resisting the advance of industrial fishing.
