Ask residents of West Frankfort about President Trump’s decision to crack down on undocumented immigrants and few protest. The president — who easily won this mostly white Illinois county on hopes that he could jump-start the coal industry — is doing what he promised, they say. But then Carlos disappeared. Juan Carlos Hernandez Pacheco has managed a Mexican restaurant in this city of 8,000 for a decade. But to West Frankfort, he's much more than that. One night last fall, he appeared with meals for firefighters battling a 2-alarm blaze. And he has taken part in just about every community committee or charity effort. Carlos, 38, was arrested by federal #immigration agents earlier this month. Since then, the community has rallied around him, writing pleas for leniency to those who will decide his fate. Tim Grigsby, a close friend of Carlos, said that the situation hasn't changed his political opinions: he'd still vote for President Trump. One never agrees with everything a politician does, “but maybe this should all be more on a per-case basis,” he said. “It’s hard to be black and white on this because there may be people like Carlos.” @whitneycphoto took this picture of West Frankfort while on #nytassingment.
