In 1928, one of the world’s richest men tried to turn a colossal swath of Brazilian jungle into a Midwest fantasyland. Welcome to Fordlândia. Recently, @bdentonphoto and @simongromero visited this decaying town in the far reaches of the Amazon River Basin. Among the ruins, they found aging vehicles inside old workshops, a decaying hospital and an American-built bungalow now home to a vegetable farmer. (Swipe left to see more of @bdentonphoto's images.) The industrialist Henry Ford envisioned Fordlândia as a place to produce rubber and create a #utopia. But things didn’t go well. Disdainful of experts who could have advised them on tropical agriculture, Ford’s men planted seeds of questionable value. Meanwhile, his American managers forbade consumption of alcohol and promoted gardening, square dancing and poetry readings. Ford turned Fordlândia over to Brazil’s government in 1945. Now, the #ruins stand as testament to the folly of trying to bend the jungle to the will of man. But it’s hardly a lost city. About 2,000 people call it home.
