I met Sidney Poitier one day in the late 50's (right before his acting career took off) when I happened to be walking south on Broadway towards Birdland. We had a quick conversation and I just knew there was something special about him; he had such a kind spirit and I knew it wouldn't be the last time we saw each other...A few years later, he graciously put in a good word about my film scoring and I was hired for "The Slender Thread" and two years later, for "In the Heat of the Night." Six films in total. Fast forward to 1974, right after my first aneurysm...It didn't look like I'd make it, so my friends planned a memorial service for me at The Shrine...This picture was taken that night and I cherish it to this day. He's been there for me in the best of times and also in the darkest...That's true friendship, and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Happy Birthday to you my brother, Sidney! It looks like you hit the big nine-O, but don't you worry, you got another 30 years on ya! Much love.
