In 1929, Solomon Guggenheim met Vasily Kandinsky while he was teaching at the Bauhaus, and purchased “Composition 8” (1923). Guggenheim went on to collect more than 150 of Kandinsky’s works. The aesthetic vision of a pure, painterly abstraction served as the catalyst for the formation of a remarkable collection that has grown to include a deep and broad assembly of modern and contemporary masterpieces.
