How was Solomon Guggenheim's collection formed? In 1928, Guggenheim commissioned Hilla Rebay to paint his portrait, and she became an influential advisor in building his collection of modern art. Rebay encouraged Guggenheim to move away from a more traditional, conservative collecting focus, and to instead seek out experimental, and especially “nonobjective” or abstract, art of the present.
