HT: Villa 1-2 Barnsley - A Jonathan Kodjia goal just before half-time gave Villa hope after they had trailed 2-0 to an Adam Armstong penalty and a second from Tom Bradshaw. Before the visitors went ahead, Villa had recovered from a hesitant start to dominate possession and create a succession of chances. Henri Lansbury’s willingness to shoot at any opportunity twice saw him denied by keeper Adam Davies as well as having another effort which ricocheted off a defender. And when Jack Grealish played the ball invitingly into Albert Adomah’s path, the midfielder unleashed a tremendous rising drive which Davies did well to tip over. But on 25 minutes Armstong fired the Yorkshire side ahead from the spot after Jordan Amavi had tripped Marley Watkins just inside the penalty area. Steve Bruce’s men responded with headers from Grealish and Conor Hourihane, both of which were saved, only for Barnsley to increase their advantage when Tom Bradshaw flicked home at close range in the 43rd minute.
