HT: Villa 0-0 Ipswich - Villa dominated the first half against Ipswich Town but were frustrated by a succession of near misses, including a Birkir Bjanrason effort against the bar. A high tempo start by Villa featured a low Henri Lansbury drive which was tipped away by Bartosz Bialkowski. The resultant corner caused all sorts of problems in the Ipswich defence before Conor Hourihane’s powerful shot was blocked in a crowded goalmouth. David McGoldrick’s far-post header briefly caused a flutter in the home defence but Villa were soon back on the front foot, Bjarnason’s fierce rising shot hitting the bar after Henri Lansbury had rolled a free-kick invitingly across the penalty area. There was another near miss approaching the half-hour mark when Scott Hogan just failed to make contact with Nathan Baker’s cross from the left. And on 36 minutes Villa went even closer, Jonathan Kodjia leaping acrobatically to meet Alan Hutton’s superb right-wing cross following a fine pass from Bjarnason.
