This week's post is from Kevin O’Connor, a student campaigner for #PutAPriceOnIt at the University of Vermont. “Climate change is arguably the greatest threat that humans have ever encountered. We live in a time of extreme urgency when irreversible damages are already occurring and the effects of climate change will only become astronomically worse.
The most influential contributor to climate change is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide pollution is a global problem that is a result of our market economy not realizing the negative externalities associated with it.
The solution to climate change is carbon pricing. To internalize the negative externality of carbon pollution, carbon pricing mechanisms offer to raise the costs of production and consumption to represent the true social costs. Carbon pricing mechanisms, such as a carbon tax or a carbon cap and trade system, simply raise the price to pollute. That’s an incentive to pollute less. Not a radical idea if you ask me.
The clock is ticking and although America’s executive leadership does not agree with the global scientific consensus on climate change, now is the time to fight, stand up, and push even harder than we ever have before.
