photo by @andrea_frazzetta // I’m very happy to join today the team of photographers here at Natgeotravel. That’s why I want to share with you this picture of the “Keké Dance”. Here we are in Ethiopia, in the Great Plain of Salt of the Danakil Region. The home of the Afar people. These nomads, who are mainly devoted to the extraction of minerals, live in one of the most inhospitable, and one of the hottest, places on earth.
In this image you can see my guide Ali meeting his friend Mohamed.
They haven’t been seeing each other for a while and they began to shout and dance just out of joy.
That’s called the “Keké” dance. A tradition of the Afar. They told me that when you meet an old friend, you dance like this, with your hand in the air.
It’s a display of happiness: they were singing and jumping on that very place.
It was a moment of pure joy: funny and completely unexpected.
Nice to meet you, and… let’s dance!
