These were a few of the state's laws in the south after the Civil War. They were called "BlackCodes". After the Civil War the former Confederate States passed laws intended to restrict the rights of African Americans. These "black codes" punished vagrancy ,forced freedmen to sign labor contacts, and blocked their right to vote. Violators were subject to arrest, and the labor of prisoners was auctioned off to the highest bidder. In the end black codes created an oppressive system of customs and laws intended to tightly restrict the civic and economic rights of African Americans. When you read these laws they sound ridiculous and you wonder how people could be so cruel. We must always be on the right side of history. We must learn from our past so we don't continue to make the same mistakes. Know your history! Black history is American history. #BHM #eachoneteachone #informationispower
