In 1872 it became the world's first designated national park. Native Americans have lived in the region for at least 11,000 years. While aurora is occasionally visible from this latitude the green patches are NOT the northern lights. They are an atmospheric phenomenon called airglow, colorless to the eyes but not the camera.
