Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety // Puffin emerging from its burrow – Puffins, of all the bird species that I have ever worked with must surely have one of the most expressive faces. This image was taken many years ago on the island of Skomer in West Wales where we stayed for a week with these charismatic birds. It’s particularly important when working in all puffin colonies to be mindful of the fact that they live in burrows, often taking over the excavations of the local rabbits that also thrive on the island, and as such to be incredibly careful where you walk. On Skomer there is a strict policy to always remain on the path to avoid damaging any of the sensitive structures and it was sitting on the path one evening that this little face appeared next to me. In terms of habituation and the absolute acceptance of people there are few species that can compete with the puffins confiding nature and on many occasions I have seen them casually walk over, or even stand on photographers lying on the path, such is their apparent ambivalence toward and familiarity with their frequent human visitors. Much like any species, once they have confidently realised that we pose no threat we simply become a part of the scenery though it is of course vital that wherever possible a respectful distance is maintained. As soon as I saw this little chap emerging from his path-side burrow I moved away but with burrows everywhere you never know where one will appear next. With just two places remaining on my Shetland tour for this July 8th-15th if you’d like to experience these fantastic birds at close quarters then you can either join my mailing list by copying and pasting this link into your browser http://www.andrewparkinson.com/#/contact/4566036726 or you can email me at [email protected] for more details.
