A page from David Foster Wallace's essay on "Authority and American Usage" from his book "Consider the Lobster". Which inspired and challenged me. What is a "Democratic Spirit"? Why do you we expect a DS to be innate to the citizens of said democracy? Is being a citizen of a democracy simply defined by being born of a country and being proud of it and its legacy and kicking up our heels on the hard fought, hard won freedoms of our predecessors and activists? Or is It a call to action? Is it an awakening, daily? A mindful practice in the meditation and participation in a massive countrywide experiment? It is a listening and a quiet patience supported by a fierce and passionate belief in the value of the rights of all human beings and members of the democracy (those hoping to gain entrance to, those born of, and those interacting with?) and why is this SO DIFFICULT TO LIVE UP TO? (Don't worry I'll totally post something soon like a beautiful sunset or a palm tree or something nice and a lot less... *insert description of whatever you felt about the above
