Photo by @andywcoleman // Humpback whales travel a huge distance from Alaskan to Hawaiian waters every year. They start to arrive in the warm tropical waters in October, but the peak season is late February through March. The whales don't eat while in Hawaii; they live off of the stored fat from a summer of feeding in Alaska. It is not known exactly why humpbacks expend so much energy propelling themselves completely out of the water, but it sure is an extraordinary sight. I'll be on the National Geographic Epic Alaska Photography Expedition in Alaska this summer for a chance to see these #whales in their feeding grounds.
