The famous Times Square Ball was inaugurated in 1907 by the owner of The New York Times as a way to promote their new Times Square headquarters. The original design was made of wood, iron and 100 light bulbs. It weighed 700 pounds taking five men to hoist into place. Over the years, the ball has been updated, featuring rhinestones, crystals and inspirational messages.
