The first New Year's Eve celebration held in New York City's Times Square occurred on December 31, 1904 by order of Adolph Ochs, The New York Times' owner, to promote the paper’s Times Square headquarters. Some 200,000 people gathered around One Times Square to celebrate the new location and the new year. In 1907, Ochs decided a firework celebration wasn't extravagant enough, and commissioned a time ball to signal the start of the new year. Today, the event is attended by some 2 million people and is among the most notable New Year’s Eve celebrations internationally.
