Photo by @jodymacdonaldphoto // In the Caribbean on the southern end of the tiny island of Bonaire large white mountains of salt can be found. They stand roughly 50ft high and can contain anywhere from 10,000 to 200,000 metric tons of salt. They are manifestations of the Caribbean's centuries old salt trade of which the island was dependent until the abolishment of slavery in 1863 slowed production. Today, salt production continues but it is also home to one of the largest pink flamingo sanctuary in North America. Primitive algae thrive in the super salty ponds giving them their pinkish coloration. Brine shrimp thrive on the algae and the flamingos in return thrive on the shrimp. If you travel to Bonaire, go see it. It is an incredible sight to behold. @natgeocreative #bonaire #caribbean #salt
