Happy #SharkSunday, here's some #OceanOptimism for you to start your day! The third area @GlobalFinPrint is uncovering includes coral reefs that are open to #fishing but have an unexpected abundance of #sharks, dubbed the "bright spots". In the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago is one of the largest exporters of shark fins to Hong Kong and residents regularly consume shark meat in traditional Trinidadian cuisine. Working closely with @erictobago, we discovered eight species of sharks and rays on BRUVs in #Tobago, including this tiger shark. The coral reefs in the sampling areas are part of a proposed marine protected area and a potential shark sanctuary that may extend around the entire island of Tobago. Global FinPrint data will hopefully help secure these protection measures.
