So how does @GlobalFinPrint study #sharks & #rays? We use baited remote underwater video surveys (BRUVs) to "capture" sharks and rays on camera. By comparing how many sharks and rays we see per camera on different coral reefs, we can determine which reefs have the greatest abundance and variety of these animals. From our data collection we will be able to figure out why certain reefs may have more sharks or rays than others - vital information that will get communicated to policy makers for protected areas and fisheries reform. The captain of the boat first navigates to a random spot on the reef. The camera is attached to a frame and deployed gently on the seafloor at a depth of 2 to 40m with 1kg of bait. The camera records any animal that swims into the field of view for 60 + minutes, like this wedgefish (a type of ray), zebra shark (aka leopard shark), and tiger shark. At each reef location, 50 to 100 BRUVs are set. Teams of volunteers at @stonybrooku & @jamescookuniversity help analyze the footage under the supervision of one of our researchers - so far over 10,000 hours of footage have been collected for analysis.
