What if I told you that everyone has the unique potential to make lasting change on our planet’s health. My favorite childhood quote comes from The Sandlot: ‘Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die.’ It is true, one person can have an enormous impact. All you have to do is look to the past: Gandhi, Jane Goodall, John Lennon, Gilbert Baker, Rachel Carson, Nelson Mandela, Susan B. Anthony, Malcolm X and the list goes on! Here at Utah State University in the Quinney College of Natural Resources, I am part of the growing “Student Organization for Society and Natural Resources” that is dedicated to living, breathing and embracing being responsible caretakers of our world. Whether installing solar panels, helping purchase electric vehicles, working toward policies that protect academic and institutional integrity from undue donor influence or implementing energy efficient infrastructure these individuals are the change they wish to see.
Their impact has not just been on campus and focused on students but has also influenced the greater community. We have organized peaceful demonstrations, facilitated voter registration events, joined "Aggies for Standing Rock," and worked diligently to pass forward-looking resolutions promoting action on air quality and environmental stewardship by local and state governments. I am proud to be #PartOfTheAnswer in the movement to #PutAPriceOnIt with my fellow students. It is up to us to protect our climate.”
