In 2008, the artist's unforgettable intervention inside our rotunda "Inopportune: Stage One", suspended nine white American cars from the top of the Guggenheim, simulating the trajectory of an exploding automobile tumbling through space. Exhibition curator Alexandra Munroe (@alexandramunroe) says the work exhibits Cai's interest in feng shui, pyrotechnic science, cosmological science, and ancient Chinese myth, confronting viewers with a scene at once tremendously violent and highly aestheticized.
