When L.A mayor James Hahn dedicated this building- the Walt Disney Concert hall- he jokingly said "This place really gleams, doesn't it? I think it's got a UV factor of 100". Turns out he wasn't kidding; the people living in the adjacent building suddenly found themselves in overheating apartments and saw their air-conditioning fees skyrocket. Traffic cones were melting in the street and the glare was so bright it even distracted drivers on the 101 Freeway, so in 2005 a study was commissioned to figure out what exactly was going on. It was discovered that the combination of hyper-reflective steel and the concave surface design created a parabolic mirror effect which was creating a microclimate with temperatures soaring to 60 °C on the sidewalk.
