Out of sheer curiosity, for the past several months I have been listening to AM 870 Conservative radio while driving in my car. Though harboring somewhat different beliefs from those espoused over the airwaves (understatement), it has been an exercise in understanding the other side of the conversation.
To be honest, I had no idea why I was doing it other than to get riled up and feel angry. I do not share some of the same belief systems as those on the right and sometimes it is as if we are speaking another language altogether.
This lead to an important realization today. If we want to "bust out" of our own #echochambers and engage with those who may not share our same beliefs, which we are led to believe is impossible, we have to start using language differently.
When sharing on social media, I have started using hashtags with words or phrases I have heard on the radio (#Freedom, #America and #GodsGreenEarth ) and they have yielded some interesting results. Those words and phrases have been a bridge.

I am sharing this because it works. Words reflect our beliefs - words lead to ideas which lead to actions which lead to freedom. You might meet resistance. A lot of it. But perhaps you can start a conversation.
A conversation does not mean I have to compromise my own values or beliefs -there are some things I will never agree with - but a conversation is certainly needed.
