The photographer @al_drago caught this view #supermoon as seen last night from Arlington, Virginia. A supermoon occurs when a full moon reaches its perigee — the closest point to Earth along its orbit. But this particular supermoon experience is extra rare: It’s the closest full moon since 1948. If you weren't up (or looking up) early this morning, you can still catch the spectacle tonight, when the moon will look about 7% bigger and 15% brighter than usual. Not super enough for you? Then enhance the experience, and look for the moon when it floats above the horizon at around 5:14 p.m. ET today, says David Kipping, a professor of astronomy at @columbia. Because of an optical illusion, the moon will look larger, and possibly more colorful. Miss it, and you’ll have to wait 18 years for another supermoon this close. (But if you think about it in celestial terms, that's not really very long.) #??
