A psychiatrist recently told Zadie Smith that a writer was “someone who really enjoys doing something else but for some reason has chosen to write.” That something else, Zadie said, is usually sport — “all these manqué tennis writers.” But for her, “it’s dance.” The subject has even worked its way into the heart of her new novel “Swing Time,” which borrows its title from the 1936 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie, arguably the greatest dance film ever made. “It was quite hard having to think about dance as I wrote this book,” Zadie told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “Because I had preserved it in my life as a joy, a private pleasure, something I didn’t want to think about, ever. But now I know that by January I’ll never want to think about Fred Astaire again, and that’s a terrible thing, because it’s been one of the highlights of my life: being able to put him on and feel much better about everything.” @gab took this portrait of the British writer #ZadieSmith while on #nytassignment. “Swing Time” will be published on November 15.
