This is my 9 year old Walker. He is an awesome athlete. He plays flag football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse and golf to name a few. But, what I love most about him is that he cares so much more about other people than he does about his own stuff. What you might not know about him is that he has Type-1 Diabetes. Diabetes occurs when our pancreas is no longer producing insulin in our bodies. Insulin breaks down the sugars that we ingest and converts them to energy. Without insulin the sugar can poison your blood. So now we have to make sure we give Walker insulin everyday. He was diagnosed at 17 months old. He gets at least 4-5 shots a day just to keep his blood sugar at normal levels. He has so much courage to have to deal with this at such a young age and it just teaches me how to be stronger in my life on a daily basis. Today is World Diabetes Day and I wanna make sure you all know a little something about T1D. Some of the warning signs of T1D are frequent bedwetting or excessive urination, extreme thirst, fatigue, nausea or vomiting. So if anyone you know is showing these types of symptoms don't confuse this with the flu. Get them to the hospital right away!!!
