As far as national parks go, it is hard to get more remote than Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. Located on the northern slope of Alaska, with the old mountains of the Brooks Range running through them, the entirety of the park lies above the Arctic circle. No roads, no trails, no buildings....just pure, unadulterated wilderness. It's a land where caribou roam in the thousands and grizzly bears hunt along the rivers, still not sure what a human being really is because they've seen so few. We did a 6 day kayak trip down the Noatak River, which runs through the heart of the park. In a year of crazy and special national park experiences, kayaking through this untouched wilderness, camping along the river, and seeing no humans and over 25 bears was among the top of the list.
