Did you know that there are 27 million people still trapped in slavery today? Or that human trafficking is a 32 billion dollar a year industry, it's on the rise, and it's also happening in all 50 U.S. States? Why aren't we talking about this? After a long week of silence as I try to process this rolling tide of sadness that has washed over so many, I couldn't be happier to spend today honoring @uheroes for the third year in a row with this angel of a woman Erica Greve. Many moons ago, I met Erica in our mutual friend's backyard, and within minutes we both knew we would know each other for a lifetime. This woman has devoted her entire life to rescuing children from sex slavery around the world, building homes for them to live in that provide a space for them to learn, to laugh, and to feel loved. Over the summer I spent time in the US home, taking the girls on bike rides and manicure dates- braiding each other's hair and making up songs. We send each other weekly videos -although let's be honest they get extra happy when uncle ian calls :)- I get pictures of dresses they're trying on for their first prom- goofy dances they're putting together in the kitchen- as we finalize their road trip to come stay with us in January. They have become family...they're now our little sisters. Erica, because of you, these beautiful girls finally have the chance to feel safe for the first time ever. Watching them experience the kind of joy and innocence that all children deserve- shedding the weight of each memory that haunts them less and less every day - is one of the most powerful things I've ever seen. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey, and for showing the world that we all have a role to play in abolishing modern-day slavery. We love you.
