In 2006, long before the Zika virus had spread across South and Central America and the Caribbean and reached Florida, Nicholas Mir was born with microcephaly. Like other neurological disorders, #microcephaly — a birth defect in which children have malformed heads and severely stunted brain development — runs along a spectrum. Mental impairment can run from mild to devastating. “We don’t know if he will walk,” Nicholas's parents recalled being told by their doctors in New York City. “We don’t know if he will talk.” But the truth was, even the doctors didn’t know. New York’s special education program gets high marks for helping children with conditions like autism, but it’s hard to provide the kind of care needed by children like Nicholas. His mother, Christine Grounds, is quick to note that her family is more fortunate than many others, because they can afford to send Nicholas to a private school.
