At sundown one evening in September, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @declanjwalsh and the photographer Tomás Munita watched as 2 women faced each other across the border between the United States and Mexico, touched fingers through the grille, and wept. Gaby Jiminez, a house cleaner in Phoenix, had never dared approach the border since she slipped into the U.S. in 1993. Now that her papers were being legalized, she had plucked up the courage to see her sister, Trinidad, for the first time in 18 years. The 2 women laughed, gossiped and cried for half an hour. Before leaving, Gaby pushed a $100 bill through a hole in the fence. She yearned to embrace her sister, but soon she would have her own passport. This #nytweekender, we’re sharing #nytopinion photos from the border between Arizona and Mexico. Visit the link in our profile to read the full story by @declanjwalsh.
