FT: Villa 1-1 Wolves - It’s ended all-square at Villa Park in this well-contested West Midlands derby. Following a bright start from Villa, Jonathan Kodjia’s early penalty put the hosts ahead – after Jack Grealish was fouled in the box. In what was a feisty affair, Villa grew in confidence and could have added to their tally but to their credit, the Wolves backline stood firm. Walter Zenga’s men won a penalty with just under 10 minutes of the opening 45 remaining – Aly Cissokho handling a cross in from the left – Helder Costa converting. The men from Molineux began the second half strongly and carved two opportunities in quick succession. Firstly, Costa broke forward with pace, his effort was into the side netting. Prince Oniangue was inches away from giving the visitors the lead – steering an effort from close range wide. Wolves’ crosses in particular troubled the claret and blue backline and only last-ditch defending rescued the home side. Villa’s cause was not aided as Micah Richards and skipper Tommy Elphick both had to be withdrawn due to injury. Substitute Nouha Dicko fired over while only a fine block from Pierluigi Gollini prevented the recently introduced Ivan Cavaleiro from making it 2-1. Urged on by an encouraging home faithful, Steve Bruce’s men dug deep and won a corner through Ross McCormack late on – Wolves were able to clear. #AVFC #WelcomeSteve #AstonVilla #AstonVillaFC #VillaPark #Wolves #WolverhamptonWanderers
