Kenai Fjords is a park dominated by water in two forms: seawater and glacier ice. So it is fitting that we spent a lot of time in kayaks looking at massive tidewater glaciers. Taking a boat cruise to see these glaciers is fine, but we wanted to get closer, to feel the wind and smell the seawater, and to be more still and quiet in order to hear and feel the glacier move, crack, and calve. For those of you who have been near a glacier, you know that eery sound of ice shifting and cracking, like gun or cannon fire at times. And when you've witnessed a giant piece of ice, frozen for a millennia, drop off into the water and send roving waves that dip and turn you in your kayak, that's the real deal. If you haven't done this, put it on your bucket list!
