I went to @risefestival last night and it was a beautiful show of collective intentions. I brought an intention with me: that I would take care of myself and others around me. This has a specific meaning for me, especially in the wake of the latest political scandal. For me, it is a reminder that taking care of oneself and of each other means practicing equality. The practice of objectifying another person's body is an extremely dangerous one. Wether it is an unwanted glance, gesture, or words, the inequality affects both sides: the objectifyer dehumanized the objectified to their own perception, and a fear grows within the objectified like a cancer. Every inappropriate glance dehumanizes: there's a difference between looking because we're human, and looking to objectify. Every word spoken is a threat: our words set our intentions and can foster fear as much as anything else. Our intentions, gestures, words, eyes are all in our control. These mistakes are easy to make. In fact, I’ve made them myself. But I’m learning, and I think we all can. I think we can do better. So be vigilant, trust yourself, and watch those around you. When you witness objectification or sexism, even verbally behind closed doors, that's the time to speak up. When we don't stand up to it, we’re part of the problem. So gimme a pledge. I want you to comment below "I", pledging that you have and/or will watch yourself, take care of those around you, and use your voice if you witness sexism and inequality. Together we can take care of each other, but it starts with me & you. Let’s move brightly into the future.
