This evening is International Observe the Moon night! This annual event has turned into a worldwide, public celebration of lunar science and exploration. So, after the sun sets in your area, head outside and catch a glimpse of Earth’s closest neighbor…the moon!
This image of the moon’s north polar region was take by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). One of the primary objectives of this camera is to identify regions of permanent shadow and near-permanent illumination.
This image is composed of 983 pictures taken over a one month period during northern summer. The mosaic shows the pole when it is best illuminated.
