Since its opening in 1959, the central void of Frank Lloyd Wright's building has challenged artists and architects to react to its eccentric, organic design. Jean Nouvel developed a dramatic design for the 2001 exhibition "Brazil: Body and Soul," painting the rotunda almost entirely black and installing a large-scale light projection that loomed over the space. Featured in the exhibition was a monumental 18th century altarpiece that towered over the floor to the rotunda, reaching halfway to the oculus.
