On the last day of #NewYorkTextileMonth, enjoy “Tar Beach” (1988), the first quilt in Faith Ringgold’s colorful and lighthearted series entitled “Women on a Bridge.” Ringgold’s quilt depicts the fantasies of its spirited heroine and narrator Cassie Louise Lightfoot, who, on a summer night in Harlem, flies over the George Washington Bridge. In describing her "Women on a Bridge" series, Ringgold proclaimed, "My women are actually flying; they are just free, totally.
