Another spread from my forthcoming book by #Phaidon: A skull of the early human ancestor #Australopithecus sediba (about two million years old) from South Africa. The first specimen from the genius Australopithecus, named A. africanus, was discovered in the same region in 1924, and the decades since have seen the unearthing of #fossils of several other related species. Together they paint a portrait of a group (first evolving about four million years ago) that demonstrates significant hominid evolution and that led to true appearance of our own genus. Homo naledi remains from the #RisingStarCave in #SouthAfrica provide so many well preserved bones to the paleoanthropologists enough research material to study for years. #EvolutionaVisualRecord
