FT: Preston 2-0 Villa - It’s all over as two first half goals for the hosts mean Villa fall to defeat in Lancashire. Ben Pearson and Jordan Hugill gave the hosts a half-time lead after Simon Grayson’s side also fashioned a number of chances in the first period. Roberto Di Matteo brought on Ross McCormack and Rudy Gestede at the break and both made an instant impact. McCormack’s drive was deflected behind for a corner while Gestede headed the resultant set piece marginally wide. Striker Gestede then went close with another header. North End were dangerous on the break and goalkeeper Mark Bunn kept the scores at two with a fine stop from Callum Robinson’s drive. The claret and blues enjoyed a lot of possession but in truth were restricted to half chances. Only a perfectly-timed Alex Baptsite tackle prevented McCormack from pulling the trigger before the Scotsman’s free-kick edged narrowly wide of goal.
