The Lilywhites came out of the traps and took the lead just four minutes in – Ben Pearson finishing past Mark Bunn from close range. Alex Baptiste then headed wide moments later. There was a huge let off for the visitors, who failed to clear their lines and Daniel Johnson, Jordan Hugill and Callum Robinson all had efforts in succession. Roberto Di Matteo’s men grew into the half and their best move arrived on 19 minutes - Mile Jedinak fed Aly Cissokho on the left – but neither Jack Grealish or Albert Adomah could meet his cross. Simon Grayson’s men carved further opportunities to extend their lead – Robinson and Hugill going close while Jordan Ayew and Cissokho saw crosses collected by stopper Chris Maxwell.
