When hundreds of US Army Air Forces troops were sent to Alaska to fight early in World War II, many of the airmen turned to Eddie Bauer, eager to get the down suit he had made for Alaskan bush pilots. By the end of 1942 the Army Air Forces asked Eddie to design a down flight suit able to keep airmen warm for up to 3 hours at -70 degrees. The result was the B-9 Parka and A-8 Flight Pants, the U.S. military’s first down-insulated flight suit.
