Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mist and fog can on occasion be quite tricky weather types in which to make successful images. Often times I’ll capture some images of animals/birds in dawn mist, usually before the sun has risen, and when I look through the viewfinder they look beautiful, serene, with an almost ethereal quality. However, when I view them on the back of the camera the resulting image frequently ends up looking murky and grey, the ethereal quality replaced by one of gloom. These images can also be quite tricky to process as the aim of course is to always have the final image as an accurate representation of what I experienced. It might just be a case that at certain times what we witness and experience does not always translate that effectively to images. What definitely does help however is when the rising sun starts to punctuate, to eat away at the mist, infiltrating the gloom and bathing the subject with even the merest hint of sunlight. This image of a young sika deer is a perfect example of the benefits of that first contact with sunlight but of course these moments are usually extremely fleeting. At the moment that this image was made the mist actually acted as a natural diffuser, softening the effect of the sunlight whilst retaining the nice misty backdrop. However, shortly afterwards the mist burnt away rapidly and such was the drop in the quality of the light that I found myself heading to the nearest forest to try and benefit from the softening effect of dappled light.
