Madonna, Los Angeles, 1994. @madonna #KunsthalRotterdam Madonna was moving in a very soulful and personal way, very touching and very much herself. At the same time, there was a feeling of perfection to everything she was doing. I was very interested in capturing some of this extraordinary contradiction, which I found absolutely stunning. What really struck me was her very strong motivation. Exhibition curator @thierrymaximeloriot wrote: "Lindbergh is best known for his simple and revealing portraits. He drew strong influences from early German cinema, also dance and ballet like German cabaret performer Valeska Gert or Sergei Diaghilev and the Russian ballet. Creating a visual history of dance in the 20th and 21st centuries, he photographed many series inspired by the work of famous dancers, entertainers and choreographers, but also reminiscent of fine arts works. For example, his 1997 image of Spanish dancer and choreographer Blanca Li, whose falling movement on a Thonet bentwood chair reminds us of Aristide Maillol’s 1938 sculpture L’Air. Years before, the American model was also photographed impersonating Vaslav Nijinsky in a tribute to the Siamese Dance from the 1910 Les Orientales dressed in Valentino, or in Jean Paul Gaultier in a George Balanchine homage; a tribute to Martha Graham with pop icon and former dance student Madonna, dressed by Japanese designers in 1995 ; his friend Pina Bausch with pieces like Viktor, also the subject of a documentary he directed in 2001, Pina Bausch, Der Fensterputzer ; American choreographer and dancer Carolyn Carlson; the Berlin Staatsballett and the New York City Ballet; Polina Semionova, principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre; and Spanish dancer Joaquin Cortés, every time capturing on film the tensions of movements and performance, the diversity of the multiple representations a singular body can engage with this art form." #Madonna #PeterLindbergh @2bmanagement @gagosiangallery @kunsthal
