#OnThisDay in 1989, Kazimierz Deyna died at 41 in a car crash. One of Polish football’s greatest players, the elegant midfielder made a name himself playing for Legia Warsaw and Manchester City. Deyna scored 41 goals in 97 appearances for Poland, coming third in the 1974 Ballon d’Or behind Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer. A gold medal winner at the 1972 Olympics (and top scorer with nine goals), he was also part of the third-placed Poland team at the 1974 FIFA World Cup, before winning the silver medal with the national side at the 1976 Olympics and captaining Poland at the 1978 FIFA World Cup.
