#OnThisDay in 1980, Giorgio Chinaglia broke a North American Soccer League record while leading the New York Cosmos to an 8-1 win over the Tulsa Roughnecks, advancing the Cosmos to the second round of the playoffs. With seven goals in one game, Chinaglia broke the record of five set by Minnesota’s Alan Willey. “He was unbelievable,” said NASL Commissioner Phil Woosnam. “You look at Giorgio and you think of the great ones. You put him in the same category with Ferenc Puskas, Pele and Jimmy Greaves. They are the best finishers of our time."
