Photo by @FransLanting Ethereal in appearance, a fairy tern hovered overhead long enough for me to add a fill flash to my camera to create an impression of a ghostly seabird at twilight on Midway Atoll in the Hawaiian Leeward Islands. Fairy terns are among the many millions of beneficiaries of President Obama's audacious decision to create the world’s largest protected area last week. The new Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument protects coral reefs, seamounts, and undersea ridges covering 582,000 square miles of ocean around the Hawaiian Leeward Islands—an area larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined.
