To celebrate #OlympicPeace we’re sharing stories of how sport brings the world together. Today, we are telling the story of a woman who cleared hurdles far beyond just the Olympic track. “Sport has given me so much that whatever I give back will never be enough.” At the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984, a shy young Moroccan, Nawal El Moutawakel, stepped onto the track. She flew over every hurdle and with every leap she took a giant step for the women of her country. She became the first Moroccan, Arab and African woman to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. Nawal believes her win helped change the lives of thousands of women around the world. She has dedicated her life to the transformative power of sport. Now as an IOC Member and head of the IOC’s Rio 2016 Coordination Commission, Nawal is pushing boundaries and inspiring hope for a better world based on her “very strong belief that sport can impact life forever.”
