To celebrate #OlympicPeace we’re sharing stories of how sport brings the world together. Today, a story about people coming together after a natural disaster.
Sport has the power to rebuild and reshape destinies. And that’s exactly what it set out to do after the earthquake that left Haiti devastated. With generous support from the Government of Haiti, International Sports Federations, and the wider Olympic Movement, the IOC worked tirelessly with its partners to build a sports centre dedicated to fostering hope and a sense of community, as well as to rebuild Haiti’s sporting infrastructures. The Sport for Hope Centre’s aim is to help build a better future for the people of Haiti. “It is open to all Haitians – from the young to the old, from professional athletes to beginners”, said President Thomas Bach at the inauguration. It’s a place where young Haitians can safely play and dream, with inspiring elite athletes training in the same facility. In addition, the Sport for Hope Centre also serves as a platform for social development and innovative cooperation to contribute to a better and more peaceful world through sport. Every day it helps rebuild, brick by brick, the future of this country.
